Pirate Skiffs Surround Crude Oil Tanker in Arabian Sea

The ReCAAP ISC has informed in its weekly report for the period of 11-17 December that it has not received any reports of incident of piracy or armed robbery in Asia; however, it reported an incident of attempted piracy in the Arabian Sea.

It said that A number of pirate skiffs have surrounded a crude oil tanker in a latest incident reported in the Arabian Sea.

The incident, which involved the 2017-built tanker Nord Lavender, occurred southeast of Bab Al Mendeb Strait on December 13, 2018.

ReCAAP ISC informed that about 15-20 skiffs approached the Philippines-flagged tanker at high speed and surrounded the vessel.

There were about four to five persons in each skiff. The 74,260 dwt tanker fired warning shots and the skiffs dispersed.

There were no reports of injuries to the ship’s crew members, and no items were stolen in the incident, ReCAAP noted.

The ReCAAP ISC urges ship master and crew to report all incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships to the nearest coastal State and flag State, exercise vigilance and adopt relevant preventive measures taking reference from the Regional Guide to Counter Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships in Asia.
