The state owned Kerala Shipping and Inland
Navigation Corporation will launch a luxury liner service, Neferetiti, named
after the famous Egyptian Queen on a six hour sail into the Arabian Sea from
Cochin Port shortly.
The Corporation has started group bookings with
the ship expected to get the bar license in a week or two. It has secured the
all important clearance from the Directorate General of Shipping for sailing
the vessel from Cochin Port.
The two hundred seat vessel, constructed by the
state owned Goa ship yard, at a cost of Rs fifteen Crores is the only one of
its kind in Kerala with sea going capability. The three storied ship has an
auditorium, banquet hall, lounge bar, Three D theatre, sun deck and Children's
Initially the ship is accepting group bookings.
The fare for group booking of 180 passengers will start from Rs 4.5 lakhs for Sea
sailing of a minimum of six hours.
The ship can travel at a speed of 16 kilometers
The state owned Shipping Corporation will soon
take delivery of a passenger boat called Cleopatra which is getting ready at a
local ship yard. The boat will be based at Beypore port in North Kerala. It
will sail between Cochin and Vaikom ports.
The Corporation has also placed order for solar
powered ship at a cost of Rs four crores with a Sri Lankan ship yard. It has
also floated a tender for purchase of another luxury liner at a cost of Rs
sixty crores which will have facilities to host passengers for an overnight
stay. They are looking for a ship which can accommodate 160 passengers.
Cochin port has been chosen as one of the Cruise
hubs in the West coast by the Shipping Ministry along with Mumbai and Goa while
Chennai port alone will have such facilities in the East coast of the country.
