First Container rake dispatched from Kamarajar Port

The first rake of container rail from Kamarajar port Ennore to Bengaluru Whitefield Inland Container Depot with 59 imported containers were despatched from the dedicated railway siding for handling containers on October 23rd.

With the starting of regular services by Maersk Line India at the Kamarajar port since last week, the freight train operator Container corporation of India has decided to start regular services between Kamarajar port and the Inland container depot at Whitefields Bengaluru.

KPL has also signed the Co-user joint undertaking agreement with the M/s. AECTPL for unloading/loading of Containers handled at their terminal.

CHX Service by Maersk Line India Private Limited at the newly developed Adani Ennore Container Terminal at Kamarajar Port Limited has been inaugurated on Octover 20. The first mainline container vessel M.V. Leonidio has been berthed in AECTPL at KPL on the same day.

The Gross Tonnage of the vessel is 48,338 MT. The LOA of the vessel is 255.37 m with a arrival draft of 13 m. M.V. Leonidio has imported 486 laden TEUís and carried 287 TEUís from KPL. The Maersk Line India Private Limited has planned to have a weekly call of CHX Service at AECTPL at KPL.

Though the container terminal at the Kamarajar port belonging to Adani group was commissioned nearly 14 months ago, very few ships had called at the terminal.

The Adani group has since then taken up the issue of disparities in freight rates between Chennai and Kamarajar ports with the Shipping Ministry. Now that the issue has been sorted out Maersk started the container service from Kamarajar port skipping Chennai port.

The continuance of evacuation issues at the Chennai port is said to be one of the main reasons why the Maersk decided to shift to Kamarajar port in Ennore  from Chennai port.
