CITPL AND CONCOR enhance last mile connectivity with relaunch of railbridging from CITPL to ICD TONDIARPET

PSA’s Chennai International Terminals Pvt Ltd (“CITPL”) and Container Corporation of India (“CONCOR”)have relaunched shuttle trains between CITPL and Concor’s Tondiarpet Inland Container Depot (“TNPM”), with the departure of a full rake of 80 twenty-foot equivalent units (“TEU”) from CITPL to TNPM on 15 October 2018 .

With the support of Chennai Port Trust (“ChPT”) and Customs, TNPM will operate as an extended gate facility for CITPL, allowing cargo owners and shipping lines to deliver and pick up containers at TNPM. TNPM is closest to main cargo aggregation and distribution centres in the area. This cuts trucking distances, reduceslogistics costs and is a more environmentally-friendly transport option.

In addition to incentives from CITPL, Concoris offering 45 free days of storage for laden containers and 90 free days for empty containers, increasing flexibility for both shippers and shipping lines.

During a ceremony to flag off the train, Mr. P Raveendran, Chairman of ChPT,commented, “This service will greatly help our customers of Chennai Port and CITPL for fast and efficient movement of the containers.” He also added his appreciation to CITPL for the efforts to convene the trade with such facility.

Mr. V. Kalyana Rama, Chairman & Managing Director of CONCOR, said, “CONCOR is committed to providing reliable logistics solutions to its customers at its network of ICD’s and CFS’s. We have recently provided 45 days / 90 days free storage to loaded/empty containers at all terminals. CONCOR is bringing another new and innovative customer friendly logistics solution – the Extended Gate, in collaboration with other stakeholders for the first time in India.Extended Gate will help faster, smoother connectivity to and from the port, avoiding the hassles of road traffic congestion at Chennai Port.”

CaptainT MadhanMohan,General Manager ofCITPL, said, “By working together with Concor on the TNPM extended gate initiative, we aim to provide CITPL customers with enhanced accessibility to our terminal. CITPLcan handle two rakes simultaneously and has been handling regular train services plying to and from ICD Whitefield, Bangalore. We thank ChPT, CONCOR, Customs and our customers for their great support.”

Also present was PSA India Managing Director Mike Formoso, who added, “We are working hard to increase the proportion of cargo handled by rail at all PSA India terminals. We appreciate Concor, Chennai Port Trust, Customs and the trade being alongside us for this initiative. We hope that the TNPM extended gate will soon be complemented with a number of other initiatives that we and other stakeholders are working on to enhance Chennai Port’s competitiveness.”
