JSW infrastructure which has been handling Dolemite and Steel Coils
from both Chennai and Kamarajar port Ennore is holding talks with the Kamarajar
port administration to take over discarded iron ore terminal at the port to
handle their cargo.
Industry sources said the talks with the Kamarajar port administration
to facilitate the take-over of the iron ore terminal owned by the Sicals. The Chennai
port administration is however persuading the group to use their berths for
But JSW group is however keen on taking over the terminal at Kamarajar
port since port has no congestion
problems and situated away from the city unlike Chennai port.
Ever since the government clamped the ban on iron ore exports nearly
ten years ago, the terminal has stopped functioning, The Sical group however
wanted to switch over to coal-handling but the move was thwarted by their
rivals who are operating two coal handling berths at the port. They opposed the
Sicalís move to enter into coal handling business.
The terminal has 13.5 meters draft, 330 meters length and sixty meters
Sources said that this is part of JSW groupís Capex plan to tone up the
infrastructure at a cost of ninety billion rs.
Kamarajar port which started off as a Satellite port of Chennai has
eight berths which can handle iron ore coal, a general cargo berth cum
automobile export terminal, Container terminal handled by the Adani group. A
five million ton LNG terminal developed by the Indian Oil Corporation is
expected to be commissioned in the next three months.
Adaniís container terminal has a capacity to handle 1.4 million tones.
The first phase was commissioned last year. The terminal is however is not
JSW infrastructure currently has a capacity of 75 million tons and
aims to touch two hundred million tons in the next two years. The company has
on-going projects in Dolvi , Jaigad and Paradip on the east coast. The company
has presence in liquid and dry bulk.
