Colombo port ranks number one in the world in container handling

The Colombo Port has received the top rank as the World’s number One container traffic growth among the top thirty container ports of the world during the first six months of the current calendar year 2018 according to global shipping magazine Alphaliner monthly 2018.

The two Chinese ports of Guangzhou and Xiamen figure among the top five ports while Singapore ranks the second position. None of the Indian ports have made the mark though the Indian east coast ports contribute sizeable chunk of the Container cargo to Colombo port through transshipment.

Announcing this at a news conference Sri Lankan Port and shipping Minister said the three container handling terminals in the port had recorded 15.7 per cent growth for the first half of 2018 ending June quoting the shipping monthly.

The minister said it was a very significant achievement as Sri Lanka never achieved that before.

According to Alphaliner global port rankings the top container growth ports such as Singapore marked 11.6 per cent ranking number two, The Chinese port Guangzhou 8.6 per cent number three, Antwerp (Belgium) 8.3 per cent number four and Port of Xiamen(China) 7.6 per cent number five.

The Alphaliner that makes the analysis is the first-choice knowledge base used by many ports authorities, terminal operators, logistics companies, shippers, research companies and banks and other financial institutions.

Samarasinghe said that all three terminals Jaya owned by SLPA and SAGT and CICT worked collectively to achieve the top position. Colombo port mostly controlled by the Chinese companies is going in for a massive expansion called the East container terminal. India had evinced interest in running the terminal but Colombo has decided that it will be run by the Sri Lankan Port Authority.
