Very large crude carrier (VLCC) calls at Chennai port

Chennai Port creates history with berthing a VLCC M.T. New Diamond on 31st August 2018.

The Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Shipping and Finance,Shri. Pon Radhakrishnan, Chennai Port Trust Chairman,Shri. P. Raveendran IRTS and Managing Director of CPCL, Shri. S. N. Pandey received the VLCC M.T. New Diamond at BD III.

The vessel M.T. New Diamond of length 333 mts, beam 60 mts with summer DWT of 2,99,986 tons and maximum Draft of 21.23 mts is the largest ship till date to call Chennai Port.  The ship is owned by Porto Emporios Shipping inc. and under the command of Capt. Nikitas Vasileios, a Greek National, who is accompanied by 24 crew.

IOCL-CPCL chartered vessel, M.T. New Diamond, is calling the Port of Chennai from BASRA Oil terminal, Iraq with 1,33,719 metric tonnes of Basra light Crude Oil destined to CPCL Manali Oil Refinery.

As per the latest trade requirement of IOCL-CPCL, their need can be catered by hiring a single VLCC vessel for Paradip as well as Chennai.  A fully laden VLCC can discharge the required cargo at Paradip and the remaining parcel can be discharged at the Port of Chennai. This will result in a considerable savings in terms of freight paid for chartering multiple vessels by IOCL-CPCL.

The ship was manoeuvered under the pilotage team led by Harbour Master with two Dock Masters and a Pilot.  The Deputy Conservator was present at the Vessel Traffic Management System Tower throughout the critical operation.
