Over 2,000 TN fishermen chased away by Sri Lanka navy

Over two thousand Tamil Nadu fishermen were chased away by Sri Lankan  Navy personnel for fishing near Katchatheevu, islands situated  between the two countries according to fishermen sources in the island.

The fishermen from Rameshwaram had ventured into the sea in 300 boats and were fishing off Katchatheevu islet when the Lankan Naval personnel came to the spot past midnight and chased them away, according to the spokesman of Tamil Nadu Mechanized Boats Fishermen Association.  The Sri Lankan Naval personnel also snapped fishing nets of 50 boats.

The fishermen were forced to retreat to the shore without the catch.

The Rameshwaram fishermen complain that repeated attacks by the island's Navy on them have affected their livelihood. They have also appealed to the Central and state governments to take steps to find a solution to the long-pending problem.

In a similar incident that took place on July 22, over 3,000 Tamil Nadu fishermen were chased away by the Lankan Navy while they were fishing near Katchatheevu.

Katchativu was handed over to Sri Lanka under the Indo Sri Lankan bilateral agreement in 1975 but fishing rights were assured for the Indian fishermen. The issue is before the Supreme Court.
