On Friday 20 July 2018 Cochin Port Trust issued work
order to construct the new Cruise Terminal which will have facilities to handle
5000 tourists and the terminal is to come up at Ernakulum Wharf of Cochin Port
by February 2020.
2253 sq mtrs area of the Terminal will have all the
facilities that go with a cruise terminal like passenger lounge, crew lounge, 30 immigration
counters, 8 customs clearance counters, 7 security check counters, Wi-Fi,
tourist information counter, duty free shopping, souvenir/artefact/curio shops,
medical care, book store, mini conference hall, gaming zone, ATM/bank services,
foreign exchange counter, cafeteria, luggage counter, toilets, parking area for
buses and cars, trolleys, wheel chairs etc.
Out of the
estimated cost of the construction of the terminal at Rs 25.72 cr, Ministry of
Tourism, Govt of India has sanctioned Rs 21.41 cr.
The Ministry of Shipping and of Tourism have jointly
taken many initiatives to promote cruise tourism in Indian. Cochin Port Trust
too has been promoting cruise tourism since it is beneficial to local tourism
trade. It is said every cruise tourist who comes there spends on an average 400
As of now, cruise vessels
having length upto 260mtrs are handled at the BTP berth and Samudrika, the
cruise passenger facilitation centre and vessels having length more than
260mtrs are handled at Ernakulam Wharf. It is in this context the new cruise
terminal has been envisaged at Ernakulam Wharf.
