Container handling by Railways has gone up since the introduction of GST Railway minister informs the Lok Sabha

There is no decline in the cargo container business after implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) from 1st July, 2017, Minister of state for railways Rajen Gohain informed the Lok sabha on July 18th

In a written answer given in the house the minister said the container loading has gone up 6.71 million tons since the introduction of the goods and service tax. The loading of cargo which was 47.60 million tons during 2016-17 had gone up to 54.31 million tons during the last financial year 2017-18.

The loading of containers have gone up 5.30 million tons ever since the GST was introduced in July last year till the end of the last financial year compared to the corresponding period previous year.

Ministry of Finance as well as NITI Aayog has been requested to consider uniform levy of GST on Rail Container traffic at par with road container traffic. Service of Goods Transport Agency (GTA) for transport of goods by road is taxed uniformly @ 5 per cent GST with no Input Tax Credit (ITC).
