Maersk Containership Picks up 113 Migrants off Italy

The container ship Alexander Maersk picked up 113 migrants from a boat off southern Italy early on Friday June 22, Maersk Line, part of A. P. Moller-Maersk , said on Saturday.

Responding to a request from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, the ship had changed its course and picked up the migrants at about 04.30 Friday morning local time, according to a spokesman from the company.

The people on board are said to be well in their health, despite the adverse situation.

The ship is said to be south of Sicily awaiting further instructions from the authorities.

Commenting on the situation that involves a merchant vessel saving migrants, Martin Dorsman, ECSA Secretary General stated: It is not acceptable that a merchant vessel, saving migrants on its own or called upon to assist in search and rescue activities, is confronted with this kind of problems. Problems that potentially affect the safety and well-being of the migrants and the crew.
