Seafarers are less happy now, says a survey

March 20 is the International Day of Happiness and The Seafarers Happiness Index showed a decline in the happiness of the seafarers compared with the last survey in 2016 by social network Crewtoo.

Inevitable isolation and poor working practices are the major villains of the decline in seafarersí happiness. The Mission to Seafarers, an institutional member of Maritime London, urged the international shipping to take happiness of the seafarers seriously. A happy seafarer is an efficient seafarer who in turn ensures growth in the industry.

Steven Jones, founder of the Seafarers Happiness Index commented: "We often see discussions around the recruitment, retention, training and provision for seafarers in the shipping industry. However, these conversations are too often based on assumption and anecdote rather than real data. By re-launching the Seafarers Happiness Index we are working to provide reliable information so that the industry can build a sustainable workforce for the future of the industry."
