The VOC Port,
Tuticorin has handled 6,43,720 TEUs on March Seventh surpassing the previous
financial yearís record traffic of 6,42,103 TEUs, 24 days ahead during the
current financial year.
The fourth largest
Container handling Major Port of the Country has handled 6,52,168 Lakh TEUs of
Containers up to 11.03.2018. The Container handing through VOC Port has witnessed
at steady growth over the years and has seen a growth of 8.63 per cent as
compared with the same period of last financial year.
Container Terminal and M/s. Dakshin Bharat Gateway Terminals, the two Container
Terminals in V.O. Chidambaranar Port have a combined capacity of 1.17 Million
TEUs. V.O. Chidambaranar Port offers the fast transhipment time to Colombo
among all Indian Ports.
Cotton Yarn, Handlooms, Machinery, Sea Food, Paper, Granite, etc., are exported
through Containers to Europe, North America and almost all Asian Countries.
Cotton, Metal scrap, Waste paper, Cotton fiber, Chemicals, Metal products etc.,
are imported predominantly from Europe and East Asian Countries. One Inland
Container Depot and 14 Container Freight Stations located in the vicinity the
Port ensures the seamless flow of containers to and from the Port.
Chairman of the
Port,I.Jeyakumar, while thanking the stakeholders, officers and the employees
of the Port who have contributed to achieve this record conveyed that this Port
is continuously striving to achieve improvement in Performance and productivity
in order to attract more volume of traffic through the Port.
achievement of the Port at the landís end of the country is all the more significant
since it is situated in the most backward region of South Tamil Nadu
region and does not enjoy deep
hinterland like the other three high
container handling ports of the country like JNPT, Chennai and Visakhapatnam..
