Karaikal Port berthed a container vessel through
coastal movement on February 26, from Chennai Port. A formal ceremony was held
to celebrate the occasion of receiving container shipment at the port .
The containers will be loaded on MV Chowgule 8
River Sea Vessel, Class 4 for coastal movement at the port. MV Chowgule 8, operated
by Sai Ramnarayan Enterprises Pvt. Ltd, with capacity of 106 TEUs, is expected
to handle traffic of 80 TEUs per voyage from Karaikal to Chennai, on a

movement as it is an economical and eco-friendly method of transportation, in
addition to saving logistics cost and facilitating timely delivery of goods.
The portís container terminal has a deep draught of 13.5 m alongside.
The port is expected to initiate regular feeder
services to Colombo in the coming months. The vessel will facilitate roundtrip
traffic of 600 containers. With dedicated infrastructure facilities, the
Karaikal Port terminal looks forward to sustain regular feeder service
connecting Colombo for Sri Lanka-bound shipments and global destinations
Equipped with mobile harbour crane, two
reach stackers and yard space of 3,000 TEUs, the container terminal also has
excellent rail connectivity with sidings and covered warehousing space of
61,000 sq. m.
Karaikal Port, located near the town of
Karaikal in the Union Territory of Puducherry, was commissioned in April 2009.
Since commencing operations, it has handled diverse cargo such as coal, sugar,
cement, fertilisers, project cargo, agro commodities, liquid cargo and
containers. The congestion-free port facilitates efficient transportation of
goods through advanced cargo handling equipment, sufficient and damage-free
warehousing facilities, faster turnaround of vessels and smooth evacuation of
cargo with well-evolved competitive logistics support.
