Cochin Shipyard fatal blast’s victim in critical condition

According to an update from Cochin Shipyard on Wednesday 14 February ’18, the worker who sustained severe burns was in a critical condition.

The worker sustained 45 pct burns as well as inhalational injuries.

“He is presently on the ventilator in the intensive care unit (ICU) and is undergoing treatment by a team of doctors,” the update reads, adding that the prognosis is guarded.

Four other workers were receiving medical treatment for the injuries sustained in the blast, however, all of them were reported to be stable.

The site of the accident has been cordoned and is being investigated by the forensic department, Cochin Shipyard said.

The explosion on board MODU Sagae Bhushan that killed five and injured seven workers on Tuesday occurred due to a gas leak detected near the AC compartment area of the ship.

The extent of the damage on the drillship is yet to be determined.

The company said that the source of gas leakage and the reason for the explosion is yet to be confirmed, once the internal inquiry ordered by the company is completed.
