Face lift given to over one thousand railway stations in the country


Over one thousand railway stations in the country have been given a face lift under the adarsh station scheme of the railway ministry. Out of the 1253 railway stations identified under the scheme, 1046 railway stations have been developed so far minister of state for railways Rajen Gohain informed the rajya sabha last week.

 

In a written answer presented to the house the minister assured the members that the the remaining stations are planned to be developed by 2017-18. Upgradation of stations is a continuous and on-going process and works in this regard are undertaken depending upon need, volume of the passenger traffic and inter-se priority subject to availability of funds.

West Bengal accounts for the largest number of railway stations taken up for development (383) followed by Uttar Pradesh (152) Maharashtra (110) Kerala (77)

Works of development of Railway Stations are generally funded under Plan head – ‘Passenger Amenities’.   This information was given by the Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha last week.
