Inland container depots to come up at Srinagar and Jammu soon

The thirteen year old project to put up Inland Container Depots or call it Dry Port in Jammu and Kashmir to give a push to apple exports from the Kashmir valley will soon become a reality with the state government proposing to set it up in joint venture with the Dubai government.

In the latest budget of the Jammu and Kashmir government, the state Finance Minister Haseeb Drabhu has announced that the ICDs will come up at the state capital Srinagar and Jammu.

The projects was initiated way back in 2005 but the land allocated for the purpose in Srinagar was handed back to the state government after preliminary work like soil testing was undertaken. Even the weigh bridges were put in place three years later but the project did not take off according to local industry sources

Former President of Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Mubeen Shah, who had played a vital role in setting-up of the ICD at that time, said getting custom clearance for a dry port has been the most challenging task. “But this time around, understanding of the state government with Government of Dubai for constructing the dry port is a huge achievement. I reckon there won’t be any such bottlenecks as the dry port involves a joint venture with Dubai which shares a friendly relation with India.
