Expansion and Modernisation of Ports in Maharashtra

Two major ports owned by the government and as many as 48 minor ports are operating in Maharashtra at present. Out of this only ten ports have modern port handling facilities Minister of State for Shipping Mansukh L Mandaviya said in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha  last week.

Both the major ports in Maharashtra, Mumbai Port and Jawaharlal Nehru Port are equipped with modern facilities. The infrastructure augmentation and modernization of these Ports is a continual process.

Out of the 48 minor ports, which are under the administrative control of Government of Maharashtra, 10 are equipped with modern facilities such as conveyor belts/cranes and 6 are barge ports. Remaining minor ports are “Port Limits” where no cargo is handled and are used for fishing vessels and ferry services only.

Steps have been taken by the Maharashtra Government for development of minor ports of Rewas, Vijaydurg, Redi, Vadhavan, Trombay and Karanja through private sector participation. Thirteen port projects valued over Rs four hundred and ten crores have been sanctioned under Sagarmala for the State of Maharashtra the minister informed the Parliament.
