November 16 th saw the state owned V O Chidambaram port surpass the highest
cargo handling in a day surpassing the record it had set hardly five days
earlier. On that day, the Port situated near the land's end handled 1.77 lakh
tons of cargo about twelve thousand tons higher than it had handled on November
The major cargoes that contributed to the Port's achievement include
limestone imports for cement industries situated in South Tamil Nadu,
Industrial coal, thermal coal for the power plants in the region, wheat, Copper
concentrate, Granite, general and Container cargoes.
The Port set a new record for the highest volume of cargo handled in a day
so far in one of its berths by handling about fifty thousand tons of limestones
from the vessel M V Johanna Oldendorff about ten thousand tones higher than the
previous record set nearly three years ago.
This was also a highest turnover from a vessel on a single day. Chairman of
the port I Jeyakumari thanked all the stakeholders, officers and employees of
the port who contributed to the achievement. The Port, he said is continuously
striving to achieve improvement in performance and productivity in order to
attract more volume of traffic through the Port.
