Sri Lanka to import four lakh tons of rice; One lakh ton of the grain already received from India

With Rice production in Sri Lanka's  Yala Harvesting Season  having fallen by around 50 percent, the government has decided to import a further  four lakh metric tons of rice this year to meet the shortfall.

Following Cabinet approval, "Sathosa the government's canalising agency imported the first consignment of 100,000 metric tons from India recently, according to official sources.

A futher 400,000 metric tons of rice would be imported shortly on the recommendation of a Cabinet Committee.

Severe drought had affected various parts of the Island nation. Drought conditions are likely to continue till the end of the year further reducing rice production.
