Puducherry airport demands Instrument landing system

Puducherry put on the air map after three years but the airport there has developed the problem of visibility forcing budget liners either to cancel flights or delay the schedule indefinitely.

Sensing the problem may become acute during the North East monsoon season about to start the airport authorities have urged the Airport authority of India to instal the instrument landing system. It is a ground based system that guides the plane in approaching and landing on runway.

The budget carrier Spice jet which is operating flights to Hyderabad has no complaint on the passenger patronage for the flights. Most of the days, the flights are full. But visibility continues to be a problem.

The airport should have a minimum visibility of five thousand meters to enable small aircrafts to land but most of the days the visibility level goes down to 1500 meters.

Puducherry government has ambitious plans to introduce flights to Bengaluru Chennai and other sourthern cities under the Udan scheme announced by the civil aviation ministry. The plan has run into rough weather on the visibility issue.
