Major reshuffle in the Shipping Ministry

The Government of India has ordered a major reshuffle in the Shipping Ministry removing the present Shipping Secretary within two months of his taking over the post.

The Shipping Secretary Mr Ravi Kant who was on an official tour of Cochin port when the order relieving him of his services as shipping Secretary was decided at the Cabinet Committee on Appointments on October Eleventh night.

Mr Gopala Krishna, 1983 batch IAS Officer of the West Bengal Cadre has been named the new Shipping Secretary. Since he is currently posted in West Bengal Service, it may take a few days before he officially takes over the post of Shipping Secretary at the National capital.

Mr Ravi Kant, Bihar cadre officer who took over as Shipping Secretary from Mr Rajive Kumar two months ago, has been appointed as Secretary, Food and Public Distribution. Mr Rajiev Kumar who was the Shipping Secretary before him held the post for nearly three years. He is currently the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh.

In another development, Mr Alok Shrivastsava, currently Special Secretary in the Shipping Ministry has been relieved of the post and posted as Secretary in the Department of Justice. Mr Shrivastava is an IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre 1984 batch. His successor in the Shipping Ministry is yet to be appointed. Mr Shrivastava was overseeing the Sagar Mala programme, the prestigious project of the Ministry

Since the changes in the top position in the Shipping Ministry in Transport Bhawan is expected to take effect only by next week, major decisions in the ministry would take some more time to fructify. There has been a lull in decision making ever since Mr Ravi Kant took over as Shipping Secretary according to ministry sources.
