State Owned Ports continue to hold sway in Container traffic while the Private Ports are gathering pace

The State Owned ports of Chennai and VOC Port Tuticorin continued to lead the race in container traffic among the ports in Southern India though the traffic is nowhere near one generated in the West Coast Ports.

Chennai Port's two container terminals along with the ones in Tuticorin have cornered nearly 53 per cent of the Market share in Container traffic among the ports in Southern India during August this year according to information available in the Shipping Industry.

During this month, the PSA terminal in Chennai Port handled 74,963 Teus cornering a market share of 21 per cent. DP World Terminal in Chennai port followed closely with a tally of 58,889 Teus with a market share of 16 per cent.

The third and fourth positions were taken by DP World Cochin and PSA Tuticorin.

Among the state owned ports in the Southern Region Visakhapatnam Port lagged behind with the VCTPL Terminal handling around 31,000 Teus.

Among the private port Adanis's Kattupalli Port near Chennai has handled 43,774 Teus with Krishnapatnam Port closely following suit with 39,712 teus including transshipment operations in August this year. Their combined market share is as high as 23 per cent though both the Ports came into existence a few years ago.

While Karaikal Port did not open the account in Container traffic during this period, Kakinada Port fared badly handling 874 Teus. The Dakshin Bharat terminal in Tuticorin port handled around 15,000 Teus.

The first phase of the Container Terminal of Adanis in the Kamarajar Port Ennore was commissioned by Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari two months ago. No container vessel has been handled in that terminal as on date.

Krishnapatnam Port leads the Transshipment Operations handling as many as 18,730 teus during August. The Port had commenced the transshipment operations since late last year by handling traffic of Haldia and other ports taking advantage of its location.

Unlike the Ports in the East Coast, the West Coast Ports of Kandla and JNPT enjoy a deep hinterland covering the entire Northern and Western states. Besides they are also close to Ports in the Gulf Region which generate massive traffic in Petroleum sector.
