India Seatrade set to kick off ‘coastal shipping and inland waterways summit’ at Kochi

Kochi--one of the southern regional hubs for trade facilitation and networking is all set to host the fifth edition of Coastal Shipping and Inland Water Transportation Business Summit 2017, says a release. The summit is an effort to build a shared commitment and decipher the role that each stakeholder will have to play in integrating the coastal and waterways transport infrastructure.  The summit that will be held on 22nd of September, 2017 at Hotel Crown Plaza, Kochi, Kerala, will set a platform for stakeholders from both government and private sectors to share and discuss ideas to strengthen the seaways and waterways industry.

 While Hon’ble Governor of Kerala, Justice (Retd) P Sathasivam will present the India Seatrade Award for Excellence in Coastal Shipping & Inland Water Transportation, Smt. Nutan Guha Biswas, Chairperson of Inland Waterways Authority of India, Dr. Alok Srivastava, IAS, Special Secretary to Ministry of Shipping, Shri Madhu S Nair, CMD of Cochin Shipyard and Shri Ravi M Parmar, IAS Chairman Kandla Port Trust will also participate in the function.

 Conceptualised by India Seatrade, this edition of Coastal Shipping & IWT Summit will create a platform to discuss various topics like Indian Coastal Shipping & Inland Water Transport: Policies, Current Updates & Vision, IWAI’s perspective to propelling India’s trade and economic growth, with particular focus on Kerala, Understanding the Cargo Owners perspective to align, engage and forge a commitment towards an instant modal shift and Reviving Coastal Shipping; Call to Move and Handle Domestic Cargo on the Coast Waters and River-borne Trade.

 Addl chief secretary of Industries and commerce, government of Kerala Shri Paul Antony, IAS, Secretary of coastal shipping and inland navigation of Kerala Ms. Tinku Biswal, IAS, Kochi Metro Rail Managing Director Shir Elias George, IAS, Director Technical, Cochin Shipyard Shri Sunny Thomas, Director Finance of Inland Waterways Authority of India Shri Alok Ranjan and speakers are from Adani Vizhinjam Port, Shreays Shipping, Krishnapatnam port, Vaizag Steel, Hindalco industries, JK Cements, RAK Ceramics, trade bodies Indian national ship owners association, Indian coastal conference shipping association, association of multimodal transport operators of India will speak at this business summit.

 Further, the event will honor institutions and individuals who have made a difference with their outstanding contribution to the maritime sector.  The India Seatrade Award for Excellence in Coastal Shipping will be a recognition for consistent leadership, exceptional commitment and path-breaking initiatives taken in developing and scaling coastal shipping in India.

 Commenting on the event, Shri. K. Mohandas, IAS (Rtd), Chairman of the summit,  former Shipping Secretary, said, “A shift from land based transportation of cargo to water based movement can happen only with deliberate, well-coordinated efforts from the governments, the infrastructure providers, the trade, the cargo owners and the shipping industry. Together, they have to find the pragmatic path forward and this conference is expected to facilitate that”.
