At least 22 people drowned after their boat capsized in Yamuna River in
Baghpat district in Western Uttar Pradesh about one kilometres north of the
national capital on September 14, the police said.
The boat carrying 60 people capsized and 22 persons drowned, according to
the District Magistrate.
After the incident, the villagers resorted to violence on the
Delhi-Saharanpur highway linking Delhi with Punjab and Haryana.
Rescue teams, including a team of NDRF, have reached the spot, a senior
police officer said. About 12 people have been rescued.
The overcrowded boat was headed for Haryana from a village in Western Uttar
Pradesh when the incident occurred. The NDRF team has been mobilised to Katha
Police and Provincial Armed Constabulary divers reached the accident spot
and have begun rescue operations.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced an
ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of the kin of the deceased.
