As you go up in the ladder the salary comes down sharply. This is typical
of the port sector after the wage revision implemented five years ago.
A spokesman of the Chennai Port and Dock officers association said
employees face a disincentive when they go up in the ladder.
A class three officer when promoted to the next scale class two faces a
sharp drop in basic pay by Rs Nineteen thousand per month. About forty officers
of Chennai Port are suffering from this anomaly. Not only do they suffer in
salary structure, their retirement benefits also get severely affected.
Several committees have formed and have recommended corrective action. The
Madras high court has recommended setting up of a new committee to formulate
the wage proposals with effect from 2012 when the anomaly occurred. Shipping
Ministry is yet to act on the court directive.
