Kerala govt keen to develop Azhikkal port

The development of Azhikkal port has been very much with the Kerala government.  A few months earlier, in May, the government planned to set up a Special Purpose Vehicle to take up the development of the port in Kannur district. The State Minister for Ports while replying to a calling attention motion in the Assembly had said that goods movement in the Malabar region would become faster once the port project is completed.

The Kerala Government appears to have decided to set up a company for developing Azhikkal port and the company will have a capital of INR 100 crore. A technical consultant will be identified for the purpose.

It is planned to complete the first phase of the development by 2020 and the second phase by mid-2021. The government has also said earlier that it would take efforts to include the Azhikkal port under the Centre’s Sagarmala project.

Located at the confluence of Valapattanam River with the Lakshadweep Sea, the minor riverine port is between the major ports of New Mangalore and Kochi.
