Large crop areas suffered extensive damage
in Katikola village under Odisha’s Jharsuguda district as the ash pond
structure of Vedanta Alumina limited caved in late Monday night.
Irate villagers registering protest have
staged dharna in front of the plant gate.
Around 50 acres of crop fields have come
under toxin ash water submergence. Besides the ash slurry substances also made
their way to nearby Veden River polluting the water body.
The incident led to widespread resentment
among locals, who alleged that crop farmland besides the ground water and river
water sources in their area has been polluted.
The plant authorities have been served a
show cause notice and have also been asked to compensate the farmers against
the loss caused to their farmlands. The state pollution control board
personnel, who have been informed of the ash pond cave-in incident, have been
directed to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.
