Tamil Naval commander of Sri Lanka vows to end drug inflow into the island

New Navy Commander Vice Admiral Travis Sinniah pledged in Kandy recently to totally stop the inflow of drugs into Sri Lanka by sea within one year according to Sri Lankan media reports.

The Navy Commander gave the pledge responding to the media after paying homage to the sacred Tooth Relic and calling on the Mahanayake Theras of Malwatte and Asgiriya. It is customary that top officials of the government in the island nation invoke the blessings of the Buddhist clergy.

VA Sinniah disclosed that Sri Lanka Navy would receive a ship from India shortly and three more vessels subsequently. These ships would be used to guard the Sri Lankan coast so as to prevent illicit entry of persons and contraband like drugs.

Measures would be taken to prevent Indian fishermen entering Sri Lankan seas, the Navy Commander said.  He pledged to take every possible step to ensure security of the country by intensifying maritime security.
