Patriotic fervor marks 71st Independence Day fete of Mormugao Port

Mormugao Port Trust organized the Independence Day Celebrations in a grand manner  at the Deepvihar Primary school grounds.  Shri I. Jeyakumar, IRTS, Chairman MPT, unfurled the national tricolor, in the presence of the Trustees of the Board, representatives of the Trade Unions, the Dy. Chairman, HODs, Port Users, Officers, employees, their families and invitees and took the salute and later inspected the parade. This was followed by the march past by the contingents of the CISF Unit, The Fire Brigade, students of Deepvihar Higher Secondary,  Secondary and Primary schools.

 Addressing the august gathering, Shri I. Jeyakumar, IRTS Chairman MPT said ‘ The Quit India Movement of 1942 which completes 75 years was an important milestone in the Freedom struggle of India.  It brought together citizens from across the Indian villages transcending all barriers for a common mission to uproot the colonial rulers. It was not only a struggle for freedom, but a fight for transformation of the country and to create a modern nation. In order to ensure that the  sacrifices our freedom fighter don’t go in vain we have to contribute our mite to bring about an all round development.  As I stand before you addressing you on our 71st Independence Day, I am confident that we will achieve our goal and contribute for the betterment of our country. On this day our Hon’ble Prime Minister has appealed to the nation to observe 15th August 2017 as a ‘Day of Resolve’. We should all strive to fulfill the wish of our Prime Minister. ”

  Further emphasizing on the port development, the Chairman highlighted the role of the Union Ministry of Shipping and said “We are in the process of modernizing the ports, increasing the port handling capacity and the efficiency levels. The Sagarmala Scheme does not only envisage the port development but, port led development, including the coastal community development too. I feel very proud to say that our port has bounced back from net deficit to net surplus in the last two years. Our port has received awards from the Ministry of Shipping for two consecutive years for our consistent cargo growth and improvement in the performance levels. The 4 lane highway connecting the port will be completed by February 2019.

 The long pending fisherman’s fishing jetty issue has been settled and Port will also undertake the construction of a modern fishing harbor at the cost of 100 crore to benefit the local fishing community and the work will commence soon. The domestic cruise circuit between Mumbai and Goa will commence from mid November this year, besides the inland Ferry service from Vasco, Baina to Dona Paula will also commence around the same time.

 Mormugao Port gives top priority for the environmental and ecological protection. Various measures are being taken to improve the environment. To supplement these efforts, shortly road sweepers will be deployed for sweeping the roads in the Port area as well in the Vasco town. The Mormugao port has collaborated with the Rotary Club, to provide sanitary facilities for 4 schools in Goa, the Port has signed an MOU with I Create India to train and provide employment opportunities to the local unemployed youth. The first such training workshop has commenced yesterday.”

A variety entertainment program including patriotic songs and colorful dances was put up by the students of the schools run by the Mormugao Port Trust Education Society. The CISF personnel had a special drill and display of firearms skills.  The Chairman, Dy. Chairman, Heads of Departments, and other dignitaries later visited the Port Hospital where they were received by Dr. Ravi Krishna, Sr. Dy. CMO, and other Medical officers and para medical staff. The Chairman visited the inpatients and spent some time with them, and later the First Lady of the Port Smt. J. Jayalakshmi distributed fruits to mark the Independence Day Celebrations.
