In fact, Kandla Port and the Independence
Day have co-relation in that Kandla is post-Independent India’s first and
only major port. It was Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who had laid its foundation
stone and it was our iron man Sardar Patel who had chosen the site for it. Nehru
in his speech had described Kandla as a temple of India and now Kandla has
proved its worth. Present Day prime minister Narendra Modi takes special
interest in development of Kandla with his choosing Kandla for India’s first
smart port city on the west coast .
Making special mention of this with a
gratitude in his speech at the flag hoisting ceremony at Gopalpuri, the port’s
visionary and workaholic chairman Ravi Parmar said though Kandla held a unique
position among India’s major ports by being the first and only major port to hold
traffic handling record of 100 million ton consecutively for two last years.
Prime minister Modi visited Kandla in May last to hasten his port’s development
by laying the foundation stones for various major projects. The PM
said that the port-township too would have a state of arts Babasaheb
Ambedkar convention centre .He said that it was after 33 years that the PM had
visited Kandla and this honour was bestowed to Kandla by PM
Terming the Industrial port city project
as a new age project, Parmar said that preliminary work was already on to set
up the smart city in a total area of 1430 acres. There would be two parts,
he said, one residential in 580 acres and the other industrial area where
environmental friendly industrial units such as, furniture making, vegetable
oil would be set up with the public investment of Rs. 1400 cr and 10000
cr private one. He said some 50000 people would get employment here.
Stating that the port trust had not
forgotten its corporate social responsibility (CSR) the chairman said that
since 2011 till today a sum of over 18 cr were provided in the port’s budget
