Indian Railways has developed High Capacity Parcel Vans (VPs) with capacity
of 23 tonnes, which are attached to passenger carrying trains, to meet the
demand of high load perishable traffic. This facility is subject to
availability of room in the passenger train and operational feasibility.
High capacity milk tankers having capacity of 44.66 KL have been specially
designed are being run as special trains to facilitate transportation of milk
through rail. At present, 3 milk tanker trains are being run, of which 2 are
run by Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMFL) from Palanpur
to Bhim Sen, and the other by the Delhi based Mother Dairy from Daund to
Railway also runs special parcel trains comprising high capacity parcel
vans for transportation of fruits in bulk, like mango, banana, orange, etc. on
demand, on a fixed path between specific origin-destination stations. The
Railways supply rakes for transportation of fruits on an indent basis.
