Capacity Augmentation at Major Ports

Master Plan has been prepared for 142 port capacity expansion projects in 12 state owned ports at a total cost of Rs. 91,434 Crores. About 884 Million ton additional capacity per year have been identified for implementation over a period of next  20 years under sagar mala program, Minister of state for shipping Pon Radhakrishnan informed the Lok Sabha on August three..

The installed capacity in Major Ports is sufficient to handle the existing cargo traffic. Against the installed capacity of 1065.83 MTPA as on 31st March.3.2017, the traffic handled by the Major ports during 2016-17 was 647.76 MT. This meant hardly sixty per cent of the capacity in major port are utilised.

 

During 2016-17, 100.47 million tonnes of capacity was added to the major ports. Both Chennai and JNPT ports were kept out of the capacity addition program last year. Port-wise capacity addition is as under:
