India Ports Global Limited has signed a
contract with Aria Banader of Iran to equip and operate two terminals at Chabahar
Port—Shahid-Beheshti—in Iran for transportation of goods and other purposes.
As per Article 6 of the contract, efforts
are to be made to commence commercial operations at the facility within 18
months from the contract activation date or 4 months from the date on which the
Lessor hands over the terminals and the infrastructure facilities to the Lessee
in accordance with the terms of the contract.
This information was given by the Minister of State
for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Pon. Radhakrishnan, in a written
reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on 27 July, ‘17, said a release.
The importance of Chabahar port to India
is immense and India is committed to develop this port which will enable India
to bypass Pakistan in reaching Afghanistan through a sea-land route. It would
also counter, among other things, the Chinese presence in the Arabian Sea
supporting Pakistan in developing the Gwadar port.
