Chennai Port starts with a bang; 4 per cent increase in container handling during the first quarter

Notwithstanding the intense competition from the private ports of Katupalli and Krishnapatnam, Chennai Port has achieved a four per cent increase on container handling during the first quarter of the financial year ending June this year.

Chennai port handled 3.94 lakh containers during this period as against 3.74 lakhs during the corresponding period the previous year an increase of 4.3 per cent.

The PSA terminal's productivity has gone up by eleven per cent while that of DP World 4.5 per cent.

Talking to Sagar Sandesh Port Chairman P Raveendran said the total traffic handled at the port was marginally lower this year because of the set back in dry bulk cargo. The Operating Profits of the port had touched Rs 217 Crores during the last financial year. During the first quarter, the Operating profit was Rs 55 crores.
