Mobile App to locate people stranded at sea

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Service, Hyderabad has launched a mobile app version of the software Search and Rescue Aided Tool to search and locate missing objects in seas.

According to the Centre sources the app was launched here on July 16. The app can help in assisting the search operations of more than sixty types of missing objects like ships, boats and people waiting to be rescued from rough seas.

It took for the Hyderabad based institute nearly five years to develop the app and is available in all the coastal languages including Tamil and Telugu.

The mobile app is functional to anyone within ten kilometers of the coastline where mobile phones are functional. The facility will be useful to fishermen caught in rough seas or when they face the wrath of the navy of a neighbouring country.

The accuracy of the app has been tested and validated. Efforts are to link the app with INSAT to improve the system and provide real time transmission and relay of information.
