Forestland misuse comes under NGT scanner

Alleged unauthorised use of forestland in Odisha’s Sundargarh district has come under National Green Tribunal (NGT) scanner.

The eastern zone NGT bench has directed the divisional forest officer of Bonai in Sundargarh district to furnish compliance on the alleged unauthorised use of 77.94 hectares of forest land Toda reserve forest by the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) for stockpiling and loading of iron ore in rail wagons without any approval from Ministry of Environment and Forest as required under Section 2 of Forest Conservation Act 1980, said Sankar Prasad Pani, the counsel for the petitioner Dulal Singh of Barsuan village.

Taking cognizance of the allegations raised in the petition, NGT also issued show cause notices to Deputy Director of Mines, Koida, District Collector Sundergarh, Odisha State Pollution Control Board, and General Manager South Eastern Railway, Steel Authority of India Limited.
