Prof K M Sivakholundu, senior most professor of Indian Maritime University has taken over as Vice Chancellor of the Chennai based university run by the Shipping Ministry.

Prof Sivakholundu who was teaching Naval Architecture in the University for the past several years took over as the Vice Chancellor on May 12 following the resignation of his predecessor K Ashok Vardhan Shetty a former IAS official of the Tamil Nadu cadre.

He resigned his post on May 11 with close two more years in the five year tenure citing personal reasons for his decision. He had almost one year and seven months left in his tenure.

Mr Shetty had taken voluntary retirement from the Indian Administrative service before taking up this job on January 2 2014. His letter of resignation dated April 12 was accepted by the President of India who is a visitor to the IMU on May 11.

Mr Shetty is credited by the faculty with turning the tide at IMU which had seen three Vice Chancellors, four Registrars and five controllers of examinations in its first five years of existence.

As Vice Chancellor he organized the first convocation of the University, ensured entrance examinations and on line admissions and counseling took place. He also revamped the administrative structure of the University and addressed the chronic problem of shortage of faculty.

He had also faced legal challenge from his predecessor P Vijayan who approached the Madras high court against his suspension by the executive council.
