Tree-felling in summer sparks resentment in Paradip

The felling of standing trees from areas close to Paradip port has sparked off a controversy.

Indiscriminate felling of trees from the suburb areas of the port township has triggered public resentment particularly at a time when sizzling summer with mercury rising above 40 degree has made life unbearable for people.

The roadside trees which were providing green and soothing ambience to Paradip are being pulled down since past two days. Such mindless tree felling would aggravate the prevailing heat wave conditions in Paradip, said green activist, Mr. Ayashkant Ray.

After the tree cutting activities were brought to our notice, the forest department has initiated steps so that further loss to tree cover is not reported from the area. For any form of tree-cutting, forest clearance is mandatory. We have asked the NHAI for compliance report on the tree cutting, said Divisional Forest Officer, Mr. Bimal Prasanna Acharya.
