Famous Buddhist site to host global conclave

 Around 120 noted Buddhist scholars around the world will meet in the three day long 4th Kalinga  International Buddhist conclave  in the famous Buddhist site at Udayagiri in Jajpur district from 10th  April  to 12th April.      

 The tourism department of the state is organizing the conclave  to attract more tourists, researchers to the Buddhist sites of the state   , said  Dr Sunil Patnaik the secretary of  the government run Odisha  Institute of Maritime and South East Asian Studies(OIMSEAS) .

All the delegates will visit the famous Buddhist sites of Udayagiri, Ratnagiri, Lalitagiri, Langudi, Kaima and other places of Jajpur district during the three day long conclave.  The famous Buddhist sites in Laliitagiri, Ratnagiri and Udayagiri in Jajpur district known as “Diamond Triangle”   reveal the once flourishing condition of Buddhist religion in the region.  Visited by the Chinese traveler  Hieun Tsang, the centers of learning were at par with their famed counterparts of Nalanda & Taxila. But many Buddhist scholars of other states and countries are unaware of the rich Buddhist heritage of our state and this conference will be useful for them to know about the historic Buddhist sites of Odisha, added Patnaik.

“The objective of the three daylong conclave   will be to promote the ancient and vibrant Buddhist heritage, art and philosophy of Buddhism in Odisha . Many eminent Buddhist scholars from many Buddhist countries including, Burma,  Japan , Thailand , Sri Lanka , Cambodia , Bhutan   will attend the festival.    .  Seminar , films, cultural performances, photo exhibition and other cultural programmes will also be organized , added Dr Patnaik.

 The conference  will present Buddhist philosophy and aesthetics through various creative forms – a dance performance, films, an exhibition of photographs and selected art works, discourses, discussions and debates, demonstrating the myriad streams of Buddhism practiced around the world, added Dr Patnaik.

  Another objective of the conclave  is to promote an understanding and appreciation of the art and philosophy of Buddhism together with the interaction of participants and audiences with scholars and researchers, added Dr Patnaik.
