Launch of Water Metro in Cochin indefinitely delayed

The launch of the country’s first water metro services at Cochin scheduled during July has been indefinitely delayed.

The state owned Cochin shipyard which had committed to deliver five boats, have handed over just one so far. It is not clear when the other boats will be delivered by the ship yard.

We cannot begin the passenger ferry services with one or two boats, as such an operation could inconvenience passengers. We will be able to decide on the launch of services only after we receive the rest of the boats,” . The Cochin Shipyard is constructing 23 boats for the Water Metro project. Due to the Covid pandemic, there was a delay in the arrival of imported parts required for the construction of the hybrid boats. The shipyard authorities has so far declined to commit on the delivery schedule of boats.

Trials runs have to be conducted with the new boats. Now, it seems the operations won’t begin until the end of the south west monsoon. Meanwhile, the work on the Water Metro terminals at Kakkanad, Vyttila and Eloor have been completed.
