Maritime Fraternity loses its Guru

A sad day for the maritime world in India. Maritime community lost a tall leader and a brilliant mind who made mastering the nautical discipline simple for over 3 generations of seafarers, not only in India but across the world.

An energetic, motivating, excellent teacher & mentor has been an inspiration to several generations of seafarers.

Born in Sept, 1942, Capt H. Subramaniam was educated in the Lawrence School, Lovedale , one of the best school in India. He passed out of the T.S Dufferin in 1960 winning several prizes including ‘ Runner up for the President’s Gold Medal’. He then served at sea until August 1968 when he took a  teaching position  at the L.B.S.  Nautical & Engg. College , Mumbai. In Dec 1990, he took over  charge as Principal of the L.B. S College. In Nov 1991, he was transferred to command the T.S.Rejendra which conducted 3 years B.SC. ( Nautical Sciences ) degree courses under Bombay university.  

In August 1993, he was incharge of the transfer of training from T.S. Rajendra to a new shore based nautical academy called T.S. Chanakya. Having established T.S. Chanakya , he again took over charge as the Principal of L.B.S College in May 1995. He retired from Govt services on 30th Sept 2002 after 34 glorious years including 12 years as head of maritime training institutions.  He then sailed in command again for six months to satisfy himself that he was also a practicing Master, nor merely a teaching Master! Thereafter continued as a Nautical Consultant in Mumbai.

His achievements/ distinctions include:

·        Extra Master Certificate ( UK ).

·        External Examiner of Master & Mates since 1977.

·        Member of the Extra Master Examination Board in India for 17 years.

·        Nautical Assessor in a formal investigation into major ship collision.

·        Leader of Indian delegation to the IMO on two occasions. 

·        Chief Examiner of Extra Masters in India.

·        Chairman of various committees include HRD for Island water Transport,

·        Title of Principal Emeritus of L.B.S college on his retirement.

·        Man of the year Award in 2001 by Sailor Today magazine.

·        Life Time Achievement Award in 2002 by Marine World magazine.

·        Liberary Distinction award by Marex Bulletin in 2006

·        Lifetime contribution to Maritime Training Award by GlobalMet in 2007.

·        Individual Innovation Award 2007 by Sailors Today Magazine

·        Outstanding contribution to Maritime Education and Training Award by GOI in 2013.

·        Outstanding contribution & Yeoman Services to the Maritime Industry in 2014 by FOSMA.

·        Chairman of Nautical Institute , India west Branch

·        Master ( Chairman ) of CMMI

·        All his books in the Nutshell Series have been great successes.

Maritime fraternity from all corners of the globe came together to pay their last respects & pray for eternal salvation of his soul and give succor to his family.  Due to lockdown restrictions being in force, the last rites were webcast live by Synergistic Solutions/Capt.Ajay Achuthan.
