Chinese Customs retaliate holding up Indian goods both at Chinese ports and Hong Kong

In a retaliatory measure, the Chinese Customs are holding up Indian consignments at both at Chinese Ports as well as in Hong Kong for the past few days.

The Chinese customs move to delay clearance of Indian goods was conveyed to the Commerce Ministry by the officials of the Federation of Indian Exporters Organisation

In a recent note to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), which is the apex body of export promotion councils, has said that Hong Kong and Chinese Customs were holding back export consignments from India over the last few days

This comes at a time when relations between India and China have soured following a deadly clash between their troops in Ladakh earlier this month.

The customs authorities tight lipped about the reasons for holding up Chinese imports

The customs authorities at Chennai, Mumbai and Tuticorin Ports were holding up Chinese goods earlier this week.  The customs authorities were however tight lipped about the reasons for holding up Chinese imports.

There were two theories doing the rounds for holding up Chinese goods. Some section of the EXIM trade believed that it was part of the exercise to identity non essential goods imported into the country from China. The government is planning to hike import duty on over 300 Chinese goods and the delay in clearance was part of the exercise.

Some others said the tightening of clearance followed discovery of a drug contraband near Mahabalipuram coast. The packets containing drugs mixed with tea bags had chinese markings. The Customs have started clearing chinese goods without any delay during the last three days. The direct port delivery of import of Chinese goods to the industry is also proceeding smoothly since June 23rd industry sources told Sagar Sandesh.
