Pakistan suspends train services between New Delhi and Lahore: stops road access to Afghanistan

The Bi weekly Samjhota Express between New Delhi and Lahore via Attari Wagah border will cease operations forthwith Pakistan has announced on July eighth according to reports in the Pakistani media

Train ceased; bogies used for transporting passengers within Pak for ID celebrations

The train, a product of the Lahore Accord runs from New Delhi on Monday and Thursday. Pakistan’s railway minister Sheikh Rasheed announced that the train will cease to operate forthwith and the bogies of the train will be used for transporting passengers within Pakistan for ID celebrations

Pakistan action follows India scrapping spl status to J&K

The Pakistani railway minister cited India’s decision to scrap special status to Jammu and Kashmir as the reason for the decision to suspend railway services between the two countries.

The train services were suspended twice earlier this year following the rise in tensions between the two countries. 

Wagah border access to Afghanistan ruled out for Indian goods

Pakistan has also ruled out possibility of linking access to Afghanistan via Wagah border for transportation of Indian goods, arguing the transit trade is not trilateral issue.

“We have asked Afghanistan for not linking trade access through Wagah border and they agreed to it because the transit trade was bilateral issue and it was not trilateral thing to bring any other into it,” Prime Minister’s Adviser to Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood said while addressing a news conference in Islamabad on July eighth.
