Shipping Minister Mandaivya meets Chairman of Kandla port within days after taking over the portfolio, the first high level consultations

Within three days of assuming charge of Shipping Ministry with independent charge the Shipping Minister Mansukh Mandivya met the Chairman of the Kandla port at his chamber in the national capital last week.

This is the first high level meeting the minister was holding with Chairman of the major port from Gujarat

The top official of the Kandla port explained to the minister the functioning of the port and the need to further develop the port. Kandla port is the first among the major ports of the country in handling the highest quantum of cargo during the last financial year.

Adani port and Kandla handle 200 million tons of cargo with excellent connectivity 

Together with the Adani port at Mundra the two premier ports of the country in Gujarat handle over two hundred million tons of cargo. With excellent rail connectivity provided by both the Railways and the CONCOR to Northern India including the National Capital Region both the ports are doing  exceedingly well while the ports in the East Coast handling hardly 40 per cent of their capacity.

That the Union Shipping Minister chose to meet the Chairman of Kandla port as the first high level consultation immediately after assuming office meant more central projects are in the offing for the port according to shipping industry sources here.

The Shipping Minister belongs to Bhavanagar area of Gujarat and was minister of state for shipping during the last government.

 JNPT the largest container handling port

Lot of central investments came to JNPT port in Maharashtra when Mr Nitin Gadkari was the Shipping Minister during the last government. Mr Gadkari also took steps to set up another Greenfield port at Dahanu in his home state of Maharashtra. JNPT has emerged in the last five years the largest container handling port in the country.

Chairman of Kandla port  Sanjay K. Mehta, Chairman, Kandla Port Trust (DPT), formally greeted Mr Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of State for Shipping (Independent Charge), at his chamber in New Delhi last week.

 He briefly explained the activities of the port to the Minister.
