Naval ship 'Gemunu' declared as detention centre for suspects arrested under PTA

Sri Lankan Naval Ship 'Gemunu' berthed in Ragama Port has been declared as a detention centre for those arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) according to Sri Lankan Media reports.

Arrested suspects can be detained onboard NavalShip for 3 months

The declaration was made via a gazette notification issued by President Maithripala Sirisena on May 24. Accordingly, suspects who have been arrested under Section 9 (1) of the PTA could be detained onboard the Naval Ship.

According to Section 9 (1) of the PTA, these suspects may be detained up to a period of three months. This detention period may be extended without exceeding three months at a time.

Missing persons after detention has been a major issue in the island nation soon after the end of Civil war in 2009.
