Coinciding with a goodwill visit of the
"Admiral of the Soviet Union Fleet Gorshkov" to Colombo Port, a
Russian delegation led by its Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Yury B. Materiy
discussed issues of bilateral importance with the Navy Commander, Vice Admiral
Piyal de Silva, last week according to Sri Lankan media reports.
Among those who participated in the talks at the
Navy Headquarters in Colombo, were Commanding Officer of the Frigate, Captain
Mikhailovich Krokhmal, Commander of the Squadron, Vladislav Malahovsky and
Military Attache at the Russian Embassy in Sri Lanka, Colonel Denis Shkoda.
The two sides also exchanged mementos, at the end
of their fruitful interaction on important bilateral matters, Colonel Shkoda
said. "A delegation led by Captain Krokhmal, held a separate meeting with
the Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne."
He said that the visiting ship crew took part in
sporting activities as well, which included a friendly football match with the
Navy team that was played at the Welisara sports ground on April 4.The crew
also found time to take in the sights and sounds of Colombo.
The Sri Lanka Navy, in accordance with naval
traditions, welcomed the "Admiral of the Soviet Union Fleet Gorshkov"
at the Port of Colombo, on April 3. The 136m long vessel with a displacement of
5,300 tons was manned by 28 officers and 208 sailors. It left for its next port
of call on April 6.
